In Okinawa, for instance, cherry blossoms can bloom as early as January! Across the country, this fleeting season transforms the landscape into a breathtaking sea of delicate pink and white blossoms.
More than just a natural spectacle, cherry blossom season symbolises renewal and celebration. It’s arguably the best time to visit Japan, as the entire country is infused with a sense of optimism and joy.
A cherished tradition during this time is Hanami (花見), or flower viewing, where people gather under blooming cherry or plum / ume (梅) trees for picnics and festivities. Peak cherry blossom celebrations begin in late March in cities across Japan, reaching central regions like Kyushu and Kansai in early April before sweeping northward to Tohoku and Hokkaido from mid-April to early May.
